Established in 2002, we have been bringing together golf enthusiasts from around Queensland with the aim of creating lifelong friendships and having a great time on the golf course. So, let’s tee off and have some fun together!
Formation of the Italian Golf Association in Queensland
In September 2001, foundation president Rosario Adamo, a past member of the Italian Golf Association in Victoria, found himself talking to Italian Ambassador to Australia, Mr Volpicelli. The Ambassador asked him to establish the Italian Golf Association in Queensland. Rosario agreed. There were many Italians who would enjoy sharing time with other people of the same ethnic origin, playing the best sport in the world.
Together with the Ambassador and the Consul for Queensland, Dr Ercole, Rosario decided to meet some Italian golfers in Queensland who would assist in the formation of “the Club”. Together with Vincent and Victor De Pasquale, both passionate about golf, Alfio Romano’s legal firm was appointed to incorporate the Italian Golf Association (Qld) Inc. With his help, the structure of the association was put into place. The Romano family has been instrumental in organizing many of the necessary activities to enable the Club to start, and their contribution is gratefully acknowledged.
The beginnings of the Club
The first meeting was held on the 7th of April 2002. That meeting attracted many keen and capable people who helped to take the Club through the formative years. At that meeting, the first committee was formed and a schedule of games was drawn up for the balance of that year. The first game was held at the Royal Queensland Golf Club in June 2002 and, since that date, the Club has grown at an acceptable rate and has never looked back.
Our History
Following a discussion with the then Italian Ambassador to Australia, Mr Volpicelli, 2001 Foundation President Rosario Adamo, in conjunction with the Italian Consul for Queensland, Dr Ercole, decided to evaluate the establishment of an Italian Golf Association, in Queensland.
After meeting with golfing enthusiasts, Vince and Victor De Pasquale, Rosario was quickly convinced that there would be significant interest in such a proposal and lawyer Alfio Romano was retained to incorporate the Italian Golf Association (Qld) Inc. Alfio and his sister and son had significant input in the establishment phase and their contribution is gratefully acknowledged.
The first meeting of the Club was held on 7th of April 2002. when a Committee was elected and a schedule of games prepared. The first event was held at Royal Queensland Golf Club in June 2002.
Since that time the Club has enjoyed ongoing growth in membership, and in 2006 successfully hosted an annual interstate carnival with our sister associations in NSW, Victoria and SA. This keenly contested event was held at the Royal Pines golf complex with our Qld Club winning a hard-fought contest.
Golf games and organised events
The Club currently organizes in excess of 15 games a year, usually on the first Monday of each month, with a second game in selected months. Apart from the customary monthly prizes for winners and place-getters, there are currently four Medal rounds, two Club Championship rounds and a Match Play Championship with trophies. Most of these are conducted for “A”, “B”, & “C” grades. The Annual Italian Golf Classic is contested at the June game in each year for members and guests and trophies are presented at the Club’s annual dinner-dance.
Each golf day is open to visitors hosted by members and there is a special prize for the best score by a guest. Members are eligible to win nearest-to-pin prizes which are provided on most par 3’s.
The Club is affiliated with similar clubs throughout Australia. Currently, the total membership in five capital cities is around 800 members.
The interstate clubs meet once a year to contest the “Festival City Challenge Cup” trophy.
How to participate in Club events
All members are issued with a fixtures calendar which provides information for all games programmed for the year. To find details for each game, download our App here.
Members can make bookings for each game by using their password. Alternatively, bookings can be made by telephone, or by e-mail.
Games may be paid for at the time of booking, by paying directly into the IGA bank account or via credit card on game day upon registration.
